How cryotherapy works

Cryotherapy is a treatment that involves exposing the body to extremely cold temperatures, usually between -110 to -220 degrees Fahrenheit, for a short period of time. This can be done through standing in a cryotherapy chamber or applying a localized cryotherapy unit to a specific area of the body. You cannot achieve these very low temperatures with the use of ice packs or ice baths.

The extreme cold triggers a range of physiological responses in the body, including a process called vasoconstriction, which causes the blood vessels to narrow and reduces blood flow to the surface of the skin, pushing it towards the body’s warm core. This helps to reduce inflammation and swelling and can also help to speed up muscle recovery after exercise.

The treatment usually only lasts up to 3 minutes, and the cold air does not contain any moisture, nor is there any air current, so it is very tolerable. However, the extremely cold temperatures activate the body's "fight or flight" response, releasing a rush of adrenaline and other stress hormones. This can help to boost energy levels, improve mental clarity, and even enhance mood and emotional well-being.

Overall, cryotherapy works by stimulating the body's natural healing mechanisms, triggering a range of beneficial physiological responses that can help to enhance overall health and well-being.

The physical benefits of cryotherapy

One of the most well-known benefits of cryotherapy is its ability to reduce inflammation and speed up muscle recovery. This makes it a popular treatment among athletes, who often use it to help speed up the healing process after intense training sessions or competitions.

But cryotherapy isn't just for athletes. Anyone can benefit from the physical effects of this treatment, which include:

1. Pain Management

Cryotherapy has been shown (C. Garcia, 2021) to be effective in reducing pain and discomfort associated with a range of conditions, including arthritis, fibromyalgia, and migraines. This is due to its ability to reduce inflammation and swelling, which can help to alleviate pain and promote better mobility. In addition, cryotherapy can also help to boost circulation and oxygenation throughout the body, which can help to promote healing and reduce pain and discomfort.

Overall, cryotherapy can be a useful tool for anyone dealing with chronic pain or inflammation and may be a good alternative or adjunct to traditional pain management techniques.

2. Improved Circulation

The extreme cold of cryotherapy causes the blood vessels to constrict, which can help to improve circulation and oxygenation throughout the body once you exit the chamber. This can help to boost energy levels, improve mental clarity, and enhance overall physical performance.

3. Weight Loss and Metabolism Boost

Studies have shown (L. Bedosky, 2022) that cryotherapy may be effective in helping to boost metabolism and promote weight loss. This is thought to be due to the body's natural response to the cold, in which your metabolism speeds up to keep your body warm and burn calories. The oldest theory in weight loss has been when you create a caloric deficit, you can lose weight. Therefore, burning calories to keep the body warm could produce a calorie deficit.

The mental and emotional benefits of cryotherapy

In addition to its physical benefits, cryotherapy also has a range of mental and emotional benefits. These include:

1. Reduced Stress and Anxiety

The extreme cold temperatures of cryotherapy can help to activate the body's natural stress response, releasing a rush of adrenaline and other stress hormones. J. Rymaszewska et al., 2003 indicated that these hormones can help to reduce stress and anxiety and promote a sense of calm and relaxation.

2. Improved Mood and Emotional Well-Being

In the journal of Front Psychiatry, 2020, cryotherapy has been shown to be effective in improving mood and emotional well-being, to include depression. This is thought to be due to the release of endorphins and other feel-good hormones, which can help to enhance mood and promote feelings of happiness and well-being.

3. Better Sleep

The use of whole-body cryostimulation to improve the quality of sleep was researched in athletes during high level standard competitions. It showed that Cryotherapy was effective in promoting better sleep. This is due to its ability to reduce stress and anxiety, which can often be a major cause of insomnia and other sleep disorders.

Athletes and sports enthusiasts have long been using cryotherapy as a way to speed up muscle recovery and enhance physical performance. This is due to its ability to reduce inflammation and swelling, which can help to alleviate muscle soreness and promote faster healing after intense training sessions or competitions.

In addition, cryotherapy can also help to improve circulation and oxygenation throughout the body, which can help to boost energy levels and enhance physical performance. (The effects and benefits of Cryotherapy for Athletes blog will be uploaded soon. Stay tuned).

Overall, cryotherapy can be an effective tool for athletes and sports enthusiasts looking to optimize their performance and speed up recovery times.

Cryotherapy for skin health and beauty

Would it be surprising that in addition to its physical and mental benefits, cryotherapy has also been shown to have a range of benefits for skin health and beauty.

Farberg, A. S. et al., 2017 research advocated for the use of sub-zero cold temperatures to help stimulate collagen production, which can help to reduce the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and other signs of aging.

Cryotherapy can also help to reduce inflammation and redness in the skin, which can help to promote a more even complexion and reduce the appearance of blemishes and other skin imperfections.

Overall, cryotherapy can be a powerful tool for anyone looking to improve their skin health and beauty, promoting a more youthful and radiant appearance.

Cryotherapy precautions and safety considerations

While cryotherapy can be a safe and effective treatment for many people, it's important to take certain precautions and consider safety considerations before trying it out.

Firstly, it's important to ensure that you are working with a qualified and experienced practitioner, who can guide you through the process and help to minimize any potential risks.

It's also important to be aware of any medical conditions or medications you may be taking that could affect your ability to handle extreme cold temperatures. Always consult with your doctor before trying cryotherapy, and make sure to disclose any relevant medical information or concerns.

Finally, it's important to listen to your body and take things slow. Cryotherapy can be an intense experience, and it's important to give yourself time to adjust and acclimate to the extreme cold temperatures.
